Bethany Johnson

Woven Landscapes (2012)

“Johnson cleverly plays with the intersection of nature, scale and human interaction.” — Meredith Deliso, Houston Press link

Evoking a variety of historical referents, from antique engravings though early computer graphics, television monitors and contemporary printing technologies, these works offer viewers an optical challenge and visual meditation on patterns found in nature.

The methodical process implies a diligent, scientific pursuit of specificity and exactitude; interestingly, though, this hand-pixilation actually leads to the breakdown of the image. While on one hand representing a loss of data, the fragmentation of the original subject simultaneously opens it up to multiple interpretations and more intuitive associations.
